Plus Conan trying to comfort Ran in place of Shinichi, and them working the case together while one of the show's main tracks plays with Takayama-san (Conan) singing lyrics about chasing love (probably).

i saw it as a parallel between Ran and Shin's parents.

Eri as a lawyer and Kogoro as a cop would have been an interesting couple while they lived together. Eri's mind is definitely as sharp at deductions as the best cops of Megure's team. Kogoro is only good at feeding 'funny man' lines to his wife the 'straight man'. but i guess he can set up the facts while his wife parses through them.

considering Yukiko and Yuusaku are seemingly polar opposites in intellects... she's an impulsive airhead with great instincts for trouble... and drives like she's an expert street-racer... but i think Yuusaku's obsessions with information and research and investigations rubbed off on his wife just a little. she did ok to keep up with Shinichi when son and mom teamed up for the 'murder on the train' case. Yukiko's disguises are nigh on par with Vermouth's. possibly better because Shinichi saw through Vermouth's latest disguise effort in movie 13. Yukiko has even fooled her own son more than once. whereas Yuusaku is barely passable posing as an elderly man one time to check up on Shinichi.

i think Ran's physique, skills at hand-to-hand combat, emotionally fueled Amazonian Warrior drive, and pure-hearted empathy towards even the worst criminals balance Shinichi's completely intellectual approach to existence and his incredibly jaded outlook on people... plus that giant nose that loves to shove itself into everyone's business... and his superhuman sized EGO! ;) that guy just loves to lord it over folks with that big big big brain of his. plus, if there is a damned crazy and risky thing Shinichi will be the first in line going right for it.

so, ShinRan there doing research in Kogoro's office mirrors his and her parents. Shin's mom and dad researching a case or putting together another book/story for Yuusaku... and the 'good ol days' when Ran's mom and dad weren't a bickering pair of sharp-tongued shrews biting at each other.
